MLive seeks a state government reporter to cover the pocketbook issues that matter to Michigan residents, as well as focus on Michigan's governor and other rising stars in Michigan politics.

The ideal candidate will :

• Be knowledgeable of pocketbook issues, the state budget and tax policy and mine those topics for issues that are relevant and matter to residents;
• Work closely with government reporters in local markets to produce high-interest stories from around the state;
• Serve as a watchdog reporter for statewide government spending and policy;
• Cover some statewide and national elections, including candidates and election / voting issues and work closely with local markets on election coverage;
• Cover Michigan's governor, her rising star and potential foray into national politics and other up and comers.

This role is remote but would require some travel to Lansing and other communities as needed.

What we’ll expect from you :

• Ability to identify and develop important stories that resonate with everyday residents.
• Familiarity or willingness to learn new tools and software, including our content management system for publishing stories and photographs.
• Ability to tell stories in smart and engaging ways and a willingness to experiment in different storytelling forms.
• Degree in journalism, communications or a related field preferred.
• Two years or more of journalism experience with a proven ability in reporting and writing.
• Ability to work independently and remotely.
• This job requires reliable transportation to meet with sources or cover events.
